Trong các tác phẩm của Kim Dung, có một nhân vật phụ nhưng khá đặc biệt, đó là Đoàn Chính Thuần, vương tử của vương quốc Đại Lý. Ông được mô tả là một người tuấn tú khôi ngô, văn võ song toàn, ga lăng, lịch lãm và là vương tử kế nghiệp ngai vàng của đất nước Đại Lý. Chính vì sự hấp dẫn ở một gã đàn ông có đủ hết mọi ưu điểm như thế, nên ông đi đến đâu cũng gieo rắc ra những mối tình. Hầu như cô gái đẹp nào xuất hiện cũng đều yêu ông. Mà yêu theo dạng khắc cốt ghi tâm, cả đời thương nhớ. Đến sau này có gia đình rồi vẫn lén lút đi gặp ông, cả đời hận ông nhưng nghe ông có chuyện gì đều bỏ hết tất cả để đi đến cứu.
Thật ra nếu đọc kỹ về nhân vật này, sẽ thấy cuộc đời ông là một bi kịch. Sinh ra trong dòng giỏi hoàng tộc, kế nghiệp ngai vàng, nhưng bản thân ông không thích làm vua, muốn cuộc sống thanh nhã, phong trần. Phải gánh trên vai sự mệnh của một vương gia, ông vẫn ngày ngày phụ vua trông coi việc nước. Bản thân là 1 vương gia, ông có quyền cưới nhiều vợ. Nhưng khi thành hôn với vợ chính thức (từ lúc còn rất trẻ) là Đao Bạch Phụng – một công chúa của một bộ tộc khác, bộ tộc có quy định chỉ một vợ một chồng, nên vì giữ quan hệ giao ban 2 nước, ông phải tuân theo điều này, đây chính là hệ quả của tấn bi kịch sau này, khi những mối tình sau này nảy sinh ông không thể ở cùng họ, chí đến rồi đi.
Nếu đọc tới đây, ta nghĩ ông là một tra nam chính hiệu, chuyên dụ dỗ lừa gạt đàn bà con gái rồi bỏ rơi. thật sự không phải vậy, ông không đến được với họ, nhưng không hề lừa gạt họ. Vẫn luôn quan tâm. Bất cứ khi nào 1 người họ bị chuyện gì, ông đều bỏ tất cả, kể cả ngai vàng hay tính mạng, để đến cứu họ. Bảo ông là kẻ đa tình nhất cũng đúng, mà bảo là kẻ chung tình nhất cũng chẳng sai. Có bao nhiêu người đàn ông có thể vì 1 người phụ nữ bỏ cả thiên hạ, bỏ cả mạng sống của mình? Có lẽ đây chính là lý do khiến những người phụ nữ của ông dù hận, cũng vẫn yêu, vẫn quan tâm đến ông.
Cái kết của Đoàn Chính Thuần cũng là một bi kịch, khi ông bị ép phải phản bội đất nước, ông chọn không phản bội, kẻ thù đem từng người yêu của ông ra giết trước mặt ông, ông nuốt nước mắt không chấp nhận. Nhìn từng người phải chết. Tất cả người phụ nữ trước khi chết đều rất hạnh phúc và yêu ông, đều nói ông biết rằng ông chính là người đàn ông tuyệt vời nhất trong mắt họ. Sau đó khi được giải cứu, mọi việc đã yên bình, thu xếp xong xuôi, ông bảo với người chính thê của mình rằng hãy chăm sóc con thật tốt, ông quyết định chết. Mặc mọi người ngăn cản, ông bảo “ngay từ người đầu tiên bị giết, ông đã có quyết định phải chết chung, nhưng vì nhiệm vụ với đất nước, ông phải chấp nhận, nay xong hết rồi, ông phải tự tử, một phần vì phải chịu chung với họ, một phần vì cuộc sống ông nếu mất đi người yêu thì ko còn ý nghĩa gì nữa” thế là ông tự sát. Chính người vợ của ông, một đời hận ông bay bướm đa tình, cũng chọn tự sát theo ông, bởi vì “trước đây thiếp nghĩ chàng là 1 kẻ phong lưu đa tình, đến bây giờ thiếp mới hiểu được, chàng là người chung tình, một đời hết mình vì tình yêu”.
Kết thúc là cái chết của Đoàn Chính Thuần bên cạnh những người đàn bà của mình. Âu cũng là cái kết đẹp, vì với một kẻ đa tình thì “chết dưới đoá mẫu đơn, làm ma cũng phong lưu”. Suy cho cùng, Đoàn Chính Thuần là người dám yêu dám làm, Có lẽ với con mắt của đời nay, dạng đàn ông này thật tệ. Nhưng ở thời đại trai tam thê tứ thiếp ngày xưa, thì ông không có lỗi gì cả, trái lại là một người tuyệt vời. Chỉ vì số phận ông sinh ra không đúng chỗ, đúng thời điểm.
